Its never too early...

  • Nov. 9th, 2009 at 5:44 PM
Hello there
First time poster, long time stalker of steampunk fashion awesomeness.
So as the title says its never too early for... NEXT HALLOWEEN.
For some it may be too soon seeing as Halloween was 10 days ago.
But for me its never too early.
Last year early into the year I had decided that I was to be Blind Mag from Repo! the Genetic Opera this year.
And the costume was little more than a epic fail.
So on November 1st I had a brilliant idea to be a steampunk wind up doll for next year.
I'd like your input on what I can do to tweak Mag's costume.
Thanks.

THREE MORE PAGES FOR THE BLOOD GOD )

Thank you, thank you, thank you to this week's donors! Your random pocket change has made the difference between having comfy two-ply toilet paper in my bathroom cabinet and devising a very unconventional method of recycling steel wool scrubbies.

My nethers are forever in your debt, generous readers.

NeonDragonArt Etsy Shop

  • Nov. 9th, 2009 at 3:34 PM
Time for some shameless self promotion!

Sue (my wonderful mother who many of you have met at conventions) opened up a NeonDragonArt.com etsy shop for discontinued or limited quantity items. Etsy is very easy to use, and she and I are very excited about it. In the etsy store you will find some con-only items, discontinued (and thus discounted) items, and some popular items from the neondragonart store.

At the etsy store we have a pair of throw pillows left over from Youmacon. We walked into the show with 25 pillows and left with two; they were very popular! Because the pillows must be ordered in bulk, we can't place orders for them often and thus we don't carry them in the NeonDragonArt.com Store on neondragonart.com itself. Because of this, they're pretty much a con-only item. They make great xmas gifts! Very soft.
Hugs Please Pillow

We also have t-shirt designs that we've discontinued carrying from conventions. We're selling these shirts at etsy for a discounted price. For available sizes, check the description. You can still order any design on any color of shirt off the NeonDragonArt.com site store, but you will pay full price.

There's also fun things like keepsake boxes, dogtags, and buttons available as well.

Click here to take a peek at our etsy shop. Thank you!

Subject: Steampunk, steampunk, everywhere!

After reading the earlier post about the bowler hats @ Target for just $15, I stopped off at lunch to check them out. They were a little hard to find, buried in a back row, but...Glee!

And right around the corner? Something even better:

So, I am turning 40. And that only happens once. To celebrate, we're having a pub crawl on Thursday, the 19th. The party will be suiting up in steamy gear, and the festivities will be led by the nationally known Marquiche, King of Jesters and Jester of Kings. We will be starting at The Melting Pot for gooey cheese and desserty noms at around 7:30 on 6th St in Austin (I'd like a headcount for that, natch). But that means that around 9, we'll start at one end of 6th St and try and drink and party our way down it. If you're interested and can make it, drop a comment here and I'll tally everyone. I know that other people should be trying to arrange this, but you know what? I DON'T CARE! Let's do this thing.

Hee Hee Hee!

Made it back to Little Rock. Despite the bizarre "way back" music being played, I thought the reception went very well.

My favorite part? My mother got drunk on wine and apparently puked all night. What comes around goes around.

My second favorite part? Awesome after party at the Moonrise Hotel when we discovered Rocky Horror was sold out. Skunky champagne be damned, we had a good time just hanging out and sinking in to the fantastic pillowtop mattress. Sad that we left the camera in the car, it would have been great to get a shot of us all piled in. Great gift, folks!

As an aside, if you have not yet enjoyed breakfast at Eclipse, go try it. I had the GRRREAT! french toast, which was served with a maple rum cinnamon reduction, fresh homemade marshmallows shaped like cresent moons and strawberries. Charlie the Unicorn had the Eclipse Benedict and approved of the Hollandaise sauce, but was confused by the green beans... asparagus would be more appropriate, yes?

Pictures tonight, I promise! I posted them to Facebook from last week but forgot about LJ. Now that life is somewhat normal again, I promise not to be so retarded.

Back to work. SIGH.
This is a public service announcement.....

December 4th is not just a Steampunk event. It is an AntiChrist with a steampunk theme.
We'll have fetish, we'll have goth, we'll have industrial too. We'll also have steampunk inspired bands and acts, walkabouts and decor.

Gap made Steampunk clothing for kids.

  • Nov. 9th, 2009 at 2:35 AM
If you can find it still find it in the stores
stella-mccartney-x-gap-kids-04

Stella McCartney has made a fabulous collection for Gap Kids with these two coats and much more for kids from very little to about 12 years old size. Hell I am short enough to hunt about and find the military jacket to see if it would fit as a crop coat but it looks like its already a super hard jacket to find and probaly even harder in there largest kid size to see if short people could make it work.

You can find parts and bits of the new line here
http://www.gap.com/browse/info.do?cid=51415&mlink=6170,1488341,1&clink=1488341
People with children or are short enough to wear this post photos of you get your kid or yourself in that military jacket.

Ramble about crafts, glass pendant necklaces, and handmade soap. Probably rather dull, and thus I cut to save your flist! )

Thus ends a very rambly ramble. I geek out over dumb things. It's 4AM. I wonder if I'll still be geeking out about soap in the morning; everything's cool at 4AM.

Steamy fun at the Gasfitter's Ball

  • Nov. 8th, 2009 at 9:45 AM
Last night was the Curious Collectors of Baker Street's annual Gasfitter's Ball, and the theme this year was steampunk! I've been going to this event for years and years, and I have to say that for this go-round people really pulled out the stops! As usual, the hubby and I had a marvelous time, although next time I wear this get-up I'm going to throw on the corset in the parking lot after I get there, because being stuck in traffic whilst wearing a get-up such as this begins to get a little painful (yesterday was the Breeder's Cup at Santa Anita Racetrack, and it seriously borked the 210 Freeway).

Of course, the first order of business was to procure a bottle of champagne...

Come inside -- the show's about to start! )

Dream

  • Nov. 8th, 2009 at 11:07 AM
I was surrounded by people. We were all standing, facing a stage where someone was talking. It may have been a Starfleet event. Or maybe Avon. There were four people who were supposed to get up and say a few words, and I was supposed to be the third one up. I had my speech all planned out. The first two got up and gave their talk, but then they skipped me and introduced the fourth one. He got up and said his words which, of course, since he was supposed to be the last one up, included farewells to everyone. After he got down, there was applause, and they they realized they'd skipped me. I was invited up to the stage, and I tried to make a joke about it, how nothing ever runs on schedule around here and all that, but when I turned to the audience everybody had turned their backs on me, and were already lined up ready to leave...

Spoonflower

  • Nov. 8th, 2009 at 6:44 PM
I just discovered Spoonflower, a site that allows you to design your own printed fabric custom by the yard.

In the interests of experimentation I have signed up and created a fabric for the purposes of assessing the site. A sample swatch should be here in the next two weeks, at which time I will update.

This is my experimental fabric. I created it using a public domain image from the Florida Educational Technology Clearing House. For those of you not in the know, they are an excellent source of free old style clip art, provided you are not using their images for profit.

I also changed the colours on the image using their insite editing software. No photoshopping required! They offer a number of different fabric weights, all of which are machine washable. You also can dicker around with the size and layout of the design. I've opted to print my fabric with a smaller image offset, so it'll look a little different.

The whole experiment cost me $7, though it'll come in a wee bit more than that after converting to Aussie dollars. That's including international shipping.

I see great utility in this. We have the same two clock print fabrics pop up on just about everything. The same two key fabrics. This could open the doors to a HUGE range of different looks, especially for our various groups who could conceivably use this to print off custom military patches.

They also operate a marketplace where designs can be bought and sold - Vicky will be hitting the marketplace if I like the look of the swatch! Some fabrics with potential: Bees and clocks, a lovely blue Alice border (which would make a gorgeous Loli-style jumper dress - I can see it in my mind!), creamy geometric patterns, all the math you can handle, lovely marbly swirls, wallpaper bats, silver keys, Mucha silver wallpaper prints, teal cameos.

Anitque laces and trims

  • Nov. 7th, 2009 at 5:04 PM
Awhile ago I bought a large box of antique/vintage laces and trims. I have only scratched the surface of what was in there, I found a fun use: adorning velvet blazers. I get velvet blazers at the thrift stores and reline, trim and give them a new life. I posted one a while ago with keys as buttons, but I just wanted to show you more cause you asked for it. And some other goodies I have been working on
Without further ado: (and available on my etsy)

Geography Question

In Atlanta, are there any underpasses going under Interstate 20, particularly between I-85 and Moreland Avenue? Google Maps seems to say no.
